Phil Ealy ontwierp high-powered X4 bloemen voor Not in This Lifetime world tour

Ervaren lichtontwerper Phil Ealy ontmoette Guns n’ Roses als een lokale band in de jaren 80 voor het laatste deel van Appetite for Destruction, en daarna voor het productie ontwerp van de Use Your Illusion tour.E
Na het contact te zijn verloren werd hij onlangs weer gecontracteerd om het ontwerp te doen voor de nieuwe Not In This Lifetime wereld tour. Met de reunie van Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan en de klassieke line-up, voegde ook Ealy zich na vele jaren weer toe.
Over die 40 jaar heeft natuurlijk een hele grote verandering plaats gevonden, en dat is natuurlijk de ontwikkeling van de evenementen techniek, en dan met name de lichtshow. Deze keer gebruikte de ontwerper grote aantallen GLP impression X4 en impression X4 BAR10.
De X4 en X4s draait momenteel ook bij Britney Spears’ Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, een show die hij ook ontwerpt en operate – “I love the way you can get so many different looks out of the fixture and the output is great,” zegt hij. “I knew they would be a perfect fit for the pods [on Guns N’ Roses].”
Hij heeft 19stuk impression X4 gebruikt voor elke zeshoekige vlakken, waar er in totaal 7 van zijn opgenomen in het lichtontwerp. Deze zijn op maat gemaakt door Upstaging “This gives us 361 individual beams of light from each pod at 45ft trim — which looks pretty cool. Also, using the X4 Bar 10’s rather than the original concept of X4 Bar 20’s. I can get a bit more movement out of those fixtures as well…. and the output is great” (Phil Ealy)
Door het creëeren van deze ‘supersize’ X4 koppen kan er een enorme lichtoutput gegenereerd worden en maakt Ealy daarmee een statement “In addition to using them all together to create these large beams of light we utilized the built-in macros for effects,” zegt hij. “[Programmer] Rob Koenig also built a number of different groups within the pods to break things up as we got further into programming.”
Vanuit een praktisch oogpunt wist Ealy dat deze X4 creatie het mogelijk maakte door alle video wall’s te prikken “At the same time the X4 Bars’ zoom feature provided the ability to wash the drum and key risers and then tighten up and give us the beams for a number of different looks,” legt hij uit, door deze X4 BAR’s toe te voegen kon hij oneindig verschillende plaatjes creëeren tijdens het programmeren.
Deze tour gaat de wereld over, in eerste instantie verhuizen ze door naar Zuid Amerika, daarna Azie en in 2017 Europa. De X4 draagt daarbij enorm aan aan waarborging van de kwaliteit en continuïteit van het ontwerp “Knowing the reliability of the X4 it is comforting to know that what was created originally will be reproduced night after night world-wide” zegt de ontwerper.
Als hij alle voordelen van de GLP X4 familie opsomt zegt Philip Ealy “I am sold on the products and the support — I believe they have hit the mark on reliability and output of LED fixtures. [West Coast Sales Manager] Dave Barten and everyone over at GLP has been very helpful putting this tour together. I look forward to specifying the range of fixtures on my next design.”
Van zijn eerste samenwerking met Upstaging zegt hij “I have been totally happy with all aspects of their services — and they were open to having a few of my own GLP fixtures on the tour — and so that worked out nicely.” En voor wat betreft de band zelf concludeert hij “They look and sound fantastic and the fan response has been very good. It was great to work with those guys again!”
